Thanks for the advice! The child-led post-tryout conversations make a lot of sense. We could even apply the same philosophy to college acceptances.

right? definitely learned the importance of giving my kid the space to make his own decision. (and now I have some capital next time I need to force him to do something! kidding...maybe ๐Ÿ˜†)

Thanks Melissa. I wrote a similar piece a month or so ago. Tryouts have become such a โ€œthingโ€ for the athletes and the parents. The stress and pressure seems unnecessary, like many other things in youth sports today.

Totally. Would love to see your take on tryouts.

"The silence before tryouts is louder than any cheer. And honestly? Itโ€™s where the real parenting happens."

Iโ€™ve learned this the hard way with sons.

The urge to โ€˜prepโ€™ them, to hype them up, to dissect every possible outcome thatโ€™s our anxiety talking, not their need.

This line you wrote about saying NOTHING? Thatโ€™s gold. Itโ€™s also brutal to execute.
